You always go in the correct direction, know how to respond to any situation and have total control of yourself and your board in the water. At this point it can feel like you aren’t making any progress. It does take a lot of practice and self-teaching and help from a professional could be beneficial.
If you feel a bit stuck on this level. The best thing Pocket Wave recommends is to get some surf videos of yourself. This help you to gain knowledge about your technique, strengths and weaknesses and thereby what to focus on to improve your surfing.
Speed and position
The first thing you have to practice to surf better is your speed and position on the wave. This will give you ease when manoeuvring.
Pomping
A correct position is crucial to creating speed while surfing and the best technique to do this is called pomping.
This technique consist of surfing from the top to the bottom of the wave wall without being either too high or too low and then repeating it. When going up you raise your position of the body and arms upwards, so you don’t stop the board. When going down you flex and put your weight forward using your body and arms.
Floater
This is a movement where you go to the “foam”/white tip of the wave and then down. It should be done before the wave breaks in front of you.
Cut Back
A cut back is a technique where you execute a 180º turn. This movement help you to return to the wave after escaping from its breaking.
Air
We all are fascinated when seeing a surfer flying in the air. But how do they do it? To execute the air technique you use your speed and slide down the wave wall and then jump on top of its crest. You can do various air maneuvers depending on how you hold the board with your hands while being in the air.
